Don't miss

1 Bonivard's prison

Head down into one of the most evocative rooms in the monument – the prison. Its magnificent Gothic vaulted ceiling is reminiscent of the great cathedrals of the 13th century. You can even see glimpses of the island the castle was built upon. It has spawned many a legend, including François Bonivard, made famous by Lord Byron in his 19th-century poem 'The Prisoner of Chillon'. The reflection of the water on the old stones, the soft sound of the waves, and the historic graffiti give this space a unique, timeless ambiance.

2 Castellan's Dining Hall

Step into one of the castle's most beautiful great halls and just imagine the delectable banquets that would have taken place here under the Savoys. In the Middle Ages, you might have sampled a cut of meat – beef, bear or even boar – sliced straight from the whole beast as it roasted on the fire.

3 Bernese Chamber

Cross the secret passageway and discover the castle's '5-star suite', complete with its very own bed, heating, running water, and even a toilet. Its decor is typically Bernese, featuring birds, fruit and plants, and dates back to the early 17th century.

4 View of the Alps and Lake Geneva

The castle has an exceptional view over the lake and mountains. From the towers and sentry walks, you can take in the crystal-clear waters of Lake Geneva and even spot the peaks of the Dents du Midi in the distance.

5 Camera Domini

Step into the Camera Domini and enjoy the many 14th-century wall murals – some of the best preserved in Switzerland. You'll find many a symbolic creature on these blueish walls – from camel, bear or leopard to griffin. They give an indication of the sheer wealth of the counts and countesses of Savoy. In the Middle Ages, its ceiling would have shimmered in the candlelight. It is, without a doubt, the most beautiful room in the castle.

6 Internal courtyards and sentry walks

Wander through the internal courtyards and along the sentry walks, all while taking in the monument's unique architecture and evolving defence systems.

7 Coat of Arms Hall

Take your time and look closely at the coats of arms in this former banquet hall. They tell the story behind the castle and its occupants. The coffered ceiling is one of the rarest vestiges of its kind in Europe. When you visit, you might even get the chance to explore one of our temporary exhibitions. You can also take in the stunning view of Lake Geneva through one of the windows.
